Preston North End has suffered its first managerial casualty of the season, with manager Ryan Lowe leaving by mutual consent on Monday morning.

The stunning revelation came after only one game of the season, following Preston’s poor performance at home against Sheffield United on Friday night. His assistant, Mike Marsh, will take interim command, along with Peter Murphy and Ched Evans.

Lowe’s relationship with the Lilywhites’ fanbase had deteriorated at times last season, and he was booed off the pitch by a portion of the home crowd following the latest defeat. He appeared to have rescued the situation near the end of the previous season, taking Preston into playoff contention, but they lost a critical home game against possible promotion rivals Norwich and have not gained a point since. With the recent setback, North End has now lost six consecutive games without scoring a goal.

The 45-year-old Liverpool native had been in charge of Deepdale for two and a half years, making him the Championship’s second-longest serving head coach, after only Mark Robins at Coventry.

He was hired as Frankie McAvoy’s successor in late 2021 after a successful spell at Plymouth Argyle, and he led Preston to a 13th-place position in his first season, followed by 12th and 10th-place finishes in the next two seasons.

A club statement read: “Preston North End can confirm that manager Ryan Lowe has left the club by mutual consent.” Ryan joined the club in December 2021 and guided it to 13th, 12th, and 10th place finishes in his two-and-a-half seasons as first-team manager.

Following deliberations on Sunday, August 11th, it was agreed that now was the appropriate moment to make a change. Ryan leaves with the appreciation of everyone at the club for his hard work, dedication, and devotion, and we wish him and his family all the best in the future.

Mike Marsh will lead the team against Sunderland and Swansea City this week, assisted by Peter Murphy and Ched Evans. “Arrangements beyond these two fixtures will be announced next week.
