  • Netflix app unsupported on older Sony TVs

  • Users need streaming devices to continue

Netflix stated that its app will no longer work on some smart TVs beginning next month, forcing consumers to add a streaming device to stay connected.

The world’s most extensive streaming service announced that consumers will be unable to access the service on a number of obsolete Sony TVs manufactured in 2014.

Users who wish to keep their devices the same in order to preserve access must pay between $20 and $50 for an Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku, or Chromecast with Google TV.

The Netflix app will no longer be supported on some 2014 BRAVIA televisions beginning July 24, 2024,’ Sony announced, adding, ‘You can continue to use the Netflix app until July 23, 2024.

TVs that are no longer compatible with the Netflix app will display the notice, ‘Netflix is no longer accessible on this device.’

The announcement includes the KDL-60W610B and KDL-60W630B models, as well as 14 others.

Netflix has previously removed its app for certain older TVs, with the company eliminating other 2012-2013 Sony models in December.

At the time, Sony stated the change was due to ‘technical restrictions’ and affected approximately 34 TVs.

The change will also affect consumers in Europe and the United Kingdom, who will lose access to the app on 42 Sony TVs.

Netflix’s decision to remove its app from some smart TVs comes a year after the company cut down on password sharing in an effort to compete with other streaming services such as Max, Disney+, and Hulu.
