Tony Mowbray has resigned as Birmingham City’s manager to focus on his recovery from significant surgery for an unspecified ailment.

Mowbray temporarily resigned in February and subsequently took a formal leave of absence in March. However, he will not be returning to the dugout at St Andrew’s. Since his appointment in January, he has won four of his eight outings.

Birmingham is currently in search of its fourth permanent manager in seven months and its sixth overall, including interim managers. In March, Gary Rowett returned to the club with the responsibility of maintaining its Championship status. However, the club was relegated on the final day despite defeating Norwich.

Mowbray has resolved to prioritize his recovery from his treatment and spending time with his family. “I have recently realized that I will not be able to resume my responsibilities as Birmingham City’s manager within the timeframe that would enable the club to prepare adequately for the upcoming season. Consequently, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position at this time,” the 60-year-old stated.
