Christian Malcolm, the Olympic head coach for the United Kingdom’s track and field team, voiced his profound disappointment after his position was eliminated in a reorganization following the squad’s poor performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Former British sprint head coach Stephen Maguire is expected to be chosen shortly for the newly-created position of technical director, which requires “deep coaching skills.”

The UKA stated in a statement that it would examine other prospective responsibilities with Malcolm later this summer, but he would remain in his current position through the world championships in Eugene next month and the European championships in Munich in August.

Malcolm stated, “I am quite disappointed to hear the news, but I understand the reasoning behind this choice.” “My current priority is to continue working in the same manner during the summer while retaining professionalism and performing my duties. During this tremendously busy summer for our sport, I am solely focused on assisting our players and coaches.

“Our athletes are tremendously talented. I’m looking forward to watching them participate and cheering them on as they compete in the world and European championships and represent their respective country in the Commonwealth Games.

The interim CEO of UKA, Mark Munro, expressed the organization’s gratitude and appreciation for Malcolm’s time and efforts. “Taking on a job during a pandemic, with all the issues that entail, along with personnel and organizational changes, has been tremendously difficult,” he said. “He has worked diligently to stabilize the ship and remained professional throughout.
