  • Putin seeks fifth term
  • Elections set for March
  • Limited opposition expected

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has declared his intention to seek a fifth term in office.

This was disclosed during an awards ceremony attended by participants in the comprehensive conflict he instigated against Ukraine in 2022.

It comes one day after election officials announced the presidential election dates of March 15-17, 2024.

The re-election of Vladimir Putin, 71, is widely regarded as an inevitable certainty, given the near absence of opposition and his complete control over the Russian media.

Vladimir Putin assumed the presidency from 2000 to 2008, resuming the position in 2012 after serving as prime minister. This means that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin has been in authority in Russia longer than any other ruler.

The 2020 amendment to the Russian constitution extended the term of president from four to six years. It emptied the slate for Vladimir Putin to run again the following year by nullifying his previous words.

With a triumph in March, he would retain his presidency through 2030. Should he reappear for office, he could then serve an additional six years until 2036.

Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, was anticipated to compete for the country’s highest office despite the enormous challenges posed by his invasion of Ukraine and subsequent standoff with the West.

It is improbable that he will encounter substantial opposition, given that most legitimate adversaries are either deceased, incarcerated, or in exile.

The elections were declared on Thursday by the Federation Council, Russia’s upper chamber of parliament. The country’s electoral commission subsequently announced that the polls would span three days, from March 15th to the 17th.

Dmitry Peskov, the official spokesman for the Kremlin, stated that an “astonishing” number of individuals desired Vladimir Putin to remain in power after the announcement.

It took him only a short time to clarify his intentions.
Mr. Putin addressed an informal gathering following a ceremony at which the Hero of Russia medal was bestowed upon veterans of the Ukraine conflict from the Kremlin.

His remarks were in response to Lt. Col. Artyom Zhoga’s request that he re-establish his candidature for election. Zhoga is the leader of a former pro-Russian separatist unit in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, which Moscow formally annexed in September 2022 along with three other Ukrainian parts.

“At this moment, one must make important decisions. “I intend to seek the presidency of the Russian Federation,” stated Vladimir Putin in remarks broadcast on Russian television.

Vladimir Putin assumed the presidency from his ailing predecessor, Boris Yeltsin, at the very close of 1999.

His hold on power, which has never been seriously questioned, has become more consolidated under Mr. Putin’s leadership.
