A rare whisky container was auctioned for £2.1 million ($2.7 million), breaking the record for the most expensive spirit or wine at an auction.

The Macallan 1926 single malt, among the world’s most coveted Scotch whiskies, was sold by Sotheby’s, fetching over twice its initial estimate.

The director of whisky at the auction house, Jonny Fowle, was allowed to sample “a tiny drop” of the whisky before the auction. He described it as having lots of dried fruit, expected spice, and rich wood flavors.

The whisky spent sixty years maturing in dark oak sherry casks before its 1986 bottling, with only forty bottles produced.

Some bottles were reportedly given to The Macallan’s prestigious patrons. Extraordinary auction results have been seen over the years, with a similar bottle selling for £1.5 million in 2019.

Sotheby’s mentioned that the forty bottles from the 1926 cask had different labels. Sir Peter Blake labelled twelve, fourteen with Fine and Rare labels, and two unlabeled.

Italian painter Valerio Adami crafted twelve additional bottles, with one breaking the sales record on Saturday. The remaining quantity of The Macallan Adami 1926 bottles is unknown, with one reportedly destroyed in the 2011 Japanese earthquake, and at least one presumed consumed after opening.
