Under the Health and Safety Act, David Shuttleworth and Matthew Melling, who operated Flip Out in Chester, pleaded guilty to neglecting to prevent exposure to risk. Children and adults sustained injuries “daily,” with one woman remarking, “I’ve never experienced more agony in my life.”

Two former trampoline park operators pleaded guilty to health and safety offences after eleven clients were spinally injured.

At Chester Crown Court, David Shuttleworth and Matthew Melling, both 33 years old, pled guilty to violations of the Health and Safety Act by neglecting to prevent exposure to risk.

They were prosecuted in 2017 following incidents at Flip Out in Chester where eleven individuals sustained back injuries, three of whom occurred on the same day.

Spinal Injuries and Personal Testimony

Wrexham, North Wales, cardiac nurse Liza Jones broke her back after falling from the 13-foot tower into a foam pit.

Ms. Jones, who was 26 years old at the time of the incident, also suffered a ruptured vertebra and remarked at the time, “It was the most excruciating pain of my life; it was truly terrifying.”

Local health and council officials initiated an investigation into Flip Out due to the excessive occurrence of injuries. A new franchisee presently manages the establishment, which ceased operations a year ago.

Melling, from Manchester, departed from the organisation in 2020, whereas Shuttleworth, from Staffordshire, tendered his resignation in 2018.

Christine Warner, a cabinet member for secure communities on the Cheshire West and Chester Council, remarked that the company exhibited a “complete disregard for safety regulations.”

In this instance, the severe injuries included eleven fractured vertebrae. Adults and children were among those who sustained injuries daily, she further stated.

A representative from Flip Out, an organisation with thirty locations in the United Kingdom, stated: “The occurrences pertain to a particular apparatus that was promptly shut down. The evolution of our systems and procedures has been substantial in the interim.

They postponed the sentencing to conduct reports.

After investigating, Cheshire West and Chester Council prosecuted the two individuals, and they may face incarceration for their transgressions.
