Amid the ongoing US actors’ strike and the responsibility of several Hollywood celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, for the creation of deepfakes, Brian Cox asserts that artificial intelligence is a matter of utmost gravity.

Brian Cox characterizes artificial intelligence (AI) as “identity theft” and “a human rights issue” when it is used to perpetually mirror an actor’s image. Cox, primarily recognized for his role as Succession patriarch Logan Roy, expressed his concern at the premiere of 007: Road To A Million, a quiz show inspired by James Bond.

“While it doesn’t disturb my sleep, I am concerned about it and would like it resolved,” he explained. “In my opinion, AI violates human rights. This is not solely a union concern. It is, in fact, a case of identity theft. Moreover, it is currently exceedingly conspicuous.”

Vulnerable Young Actors

Cox particularly worries about young actors, whom he considers more susceptible to exploitation by unscrupulous producers. He said, “The younger actors are put in a situation where they’re told they have to do this, and they don’t. But they don’t know that at the time… The situation has been truly dreadful. Then, regarding the arrangement wherein we offer you either $50 or £50 in exchange for your perpetual presence. I would have essentially told them to ‘f*** off.'”

For over a century, actors in the United States have gone on strike over pay and working conditions. Including improved protections against the unauthorized use of their images by artificial intelligence. Generative AI can successfully replicate verbal, physical, and facial emotions, making actors vulnerable to interruption.

Deepfake Deception

On Thursday, Scarlett Johansson became the latest star to be tricked by an unapproved deepfake ad. Similar to other prominent individuals, including Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Keanu Reeves, she has been subjected to unauthorized deepfakes that have garnered widespread attention.

AI in the Entertainment Industry

AI has become a contentious issue during the ongoing negotiations between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

Tech billionaire Elon Musk was among the summit’s delegates, and the Bletchley Declaration was formed, entailing the collaboration of 28 countries, including the United States and China, to investigate safety concerns associated with the most advanced AI models in the world.
