By a German court, Olympic men’s tennis champion Alexander Zverev was found guilty of bodily harm and sanctions totaling €450,000 (£392,000) against his ex-girlfriend.

Legal Proceedings and Penalty Order

A Berlin criminal courts spokesperson verified that an order was issued against Zverev by the Tiergarten district court on October 2. In May 2020, Zverev was charged with physically assaulting and endangering the health of a woman during an argument that transpired in Berlin. In total, Zverev has been fined €450,000, or €90 daily rates of €5,000. The charge has been denied by Zverev, who has also filed an objection to the order.

Challenging the Allegations

In July, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office applied for the issuance of the order. A public prosecutor’s office in Germany may employ a penalty order in situations where it deems a trial unnecessary, such as when the case is relatively straightforward and the accusation is supported by substantial evidence. The defendant may contest the penalty order, which would result in a proceeding in public.

Lawyers’ Response and Medical Opinions

Because the ninth-ranked male player in the world has challenged the penalty order, the defendant and plaintiffs will reappear before the main hearing of the Tiergarten district court. A public trial will probably be ordered, and until then, Zverev maintains the presumption of innocence. In addition, the former fiancée of Zverev has filed a co-complaint with the Berlin public prosecutor.

Zverev’s Determination to Contest the Case

Zverev provided a concise response to the prospective penalty order in July. “From my perspective, I categorically deny the accusations. My solicitors are attending to the situation. Regarding it further, I shall remain silent.

Also Schertz Bergmann, Zverev’s attorneys, verified in a Tuesday statement that he had challenged the penalty order, which they deemed “scandalous” and refuted the alleged injured party’s allegations. In addition, the statement stated that they possessed medical experts’ opinions in support of Zverev’s denials.

The procedure is reprehensible; its constitutionality and fairness cannot be questioned. Mr. Zverev will employ every available course of action to combat this.
