A rugby player who experienced a cardiac arrest during a match in Cambridgeshire has tragically passed away.

Arturas Rudys, aged 27, reportedly collapsed during Saturday’s match at Wisbech Rugby Club on Chapel Road, Wisbech, as reported to emergency services.

Despite CPR and the use of a defibrillator, they were unable to resuscitate the victim, who passed away at the emergency site.

Wisbech’s Eastern Counties First Division opponents, Diss Rugby Football Club, cancelled the match on Facebook due to the incident.

Wisbech Rugby Club posted the following statement on its website on Sunday: “The club regrets to inform you of the passing of Arturas Rudys, who was injured during a match on Saturday, October 14th.

“Arturas, who was 26 when he joined Wisbech RFC in 2013, was a highly esteemed and respected member of our club.”

“Wisbech RFC would like to express its gratitude to all those who assisted Arturas during his critical moments of concern—club first aiders, teammates, and Diss RFC.”

“The club also extends its gratitude to the first responders and emergency services dispatched to the location.”

“As a club, we are in contact with Arturas’ family to offer our heartfelt sympathies and support.”

According to his companion, Jolita Kiseliovaite, the two of them have a two-year-old son. A fundraising page created by her has raised £6,000.

David Dobson, the club secretary, described him as a “young man eager to enhance his game.”

“From the outset, he was a very polite and personable young man, enthusiastic to partake in rugby,” he told the PA news agency.

“He joined Lithuania’s rugby club and became active before his family moved to England.”

“He made an immediate impact on players his age and older.”
