A coach carrying tourists, including Ukrainians, plunged approximately 30 meters from a northern Italy flyover. There have been at least 21 fatalities, with concerns of a higher toll.

The coach fell from a flyover near Venice, Italy, igniting and resulting in at least 21 deaths.

Italian authorities confirmed the presence of travelers from various nationalities on board, with 18 more injured.

Among the injured were individuals from Ukraine, Germany, Spain, Austria, and France.

Authorities reported at least two minors among the deceased passengers, with Ukrainian passports found.

The British embassy in Italy had no information on British passengers on board.

The 40-year-old driver, Alberto Rizzotto, died in the crash. His colleagues described him as a skilled driver with seven years of experience.

One of the 21 victims was an Austrian woman believed to be the mother of two young daughters, aged 13 and 3, who were hospitalized in non-life-threatening conditions.

Venice mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, called the accident a “terrible tragedy” and declared a period of mourning for the victims.

The crash occurred in the Mestre district, connected to Venice by a bridge, after the coach veered off the road near the railway tracks.

Guests rented the bus from Marghera’s Camping Village Jolly.

The wreckage, which plummeted 30 metres (98 feet) onto power wires and caught fire, yielded 18 bodies.

A firefighter described the scene as “horrific,” and it took about an hour to remove several bodies.

The cause of the crash remains unknown.

The governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said, “The bus was new and electric, and that street wasn’t particularly problematic.”

Rescue operations are ongoing, and the death toll may rise.

None of the injured died overnight, with four in intensive care.

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, conveyed her condolences for the tragic accident in Mestre and expressed her support for the victims and their families.

The accident site has been cleared, and traffic in the area has resumed.

Italy has witnessed several fatal bus accidents in recent years, including a 2013 incident in southern Italy where a bus plunged off a viaduct, claiming 40 lives, and a 2017 accident near Verona involving a bus carrying Hungarian students that resulted in 16 fatalities.
