Rishi Sunak claims he wants to halt the “hare-brained” road calming and safety schemes, including 20mph zones, to put an end to what he calls a “war on motorists.

The prime minister stated his desire to ensure that drivers would no longer be “forced” to adhere to such measures.

Tensions escalated last weekend following a fatal siege at a monastery in northern Kosovo, where masked gunmen and local police engaged in a standoff.

A police officer and three gunmen died in a 12-hour gunfight after the assailants barricaded themselves with priests and pilgrims.

According to the White House National Security Council, it was a “well-coordinated and planned” attack, marking one of the worst incidents since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

Kosovo’s prime minister, Albin Kurti, alleged that Serbia was behind the assault, but these claims have been denied.

Mr. Kurti welcomed NATO’s decision and suggested that last Sunday’s attack implies that Serbia, which doesn’t recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty, aims to destabilize the country with Russia’s assistance.

US officials are closely monitoring a significant deployment of Serbian troops along the border with Kosovo, with Mr. Murti stating that “they have a lot of military equipment” from Russia and China.

The new agreement gives NATO power over British forces “if necessary to address the current situation”.

About 4,500 soldiers from 27 NATO and partner nations will make up the KFOR peacekeeping mission.

The West worries that Russia, through Serbia, would destabilise the Balkans to distract from its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
