Dan Wootton told viewers he had been targeted by “nefarious players with an axe to grind,” and he denied “criminal allegations” and “unspeakable slurs” made about him on social media.

Dan Wootton denied all criminal charges against him on social media, calling it a “smear campaign.”

He began his daily GB News program, Dan Wootton Tonight, with the following statement: “As a journalist, I feel uncomfortable being the story, but I’ve always promised you that this show has no spin, no bias, and no censorship, so I owe it to you to address this.”

The 40-year-old said he felt compelled to respond to allegations circulating online after a Monday report by Byline Times detailed allegations of potentially criminal behavior spanning a decade.

Referring to allegations leveled against him, Wootton stated, “I have been the target of a smear campaign by nefarious players with an axe to grind.”

As a result of these allegations, he disclosed for the first time that he had been the victim of an abusive relationship in the past.

“I have made mistakes in judgment in the past, but the criminal accusations made against me are simply false,” he continued.

Wootton also mentioned “other abhorrent insults” he claimed had been made about him online.

He added that he could devote his entire two-hour program to addressing the allegations, but “on the advice of my solicitors, I cannot comment further.”

Byline Times reported that they have provided evidence to the Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson stated, “In June 2023, the Metropolitan Police were contacted regarding allegations that a man had committed sexual offenses.

“Officers are evaluating information to determine whether a crime has been committed.”

They stated that there is no active investigation at present.

Many of the allegations claim to have occurred while Wootton was employed at The Sun publication.

Wootton, who was born in New Zealand, previously worked as a journalist for the now-defunct News Of The World. According to his admission, he is a “polarising figure.”

In 2011, he transferred to The Sun newspaper following the phone hacking scandal. He joined GB News in 2021.

His weeknight opinion show on GB News is the most-watched program on the channel. Last week, Wootton was off the air and told viewers he was on vacation with his family in New Zealand.
