According to Narendra Modi, the US has not criticised India’s attitude on Russia in the Ukraine war.

Modi was challenged by the Wall Street Journal about US criticism for not opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He responded, “I do not believe this perception is widespread in the United States.”

“I believe India’s position is well comprehended and widely known across the globe. The international community is confident that India’s top priority is harmony,” he said.

Modi departed on a state visit to the United States on Tuesday, which was billed as a turning point for bilateral relations, with a concentration on deeper cooperation in defense and high technology.

New Delhi has grown its commerce with Russia to unprecedented levels, mostly due to oil imports.

As part of his strategy to win what he sees as a contest between free and autocratic societies, particularly China, US President Joe Biden has been anxious to strengthen relations with India.

The report stated that Modi advocated for changes to global institutions such as the United Nations to adapt them to an increasingly “multipolar world order” and make them more representative of the world’s poorer nations.

He stated that India would like to become a permanent member of the Security Council.

“The world should be asked if it wants India to be there,” he stated.

Modi also stated that India’s relations with China could only advance if there was harmony on their shared border.

After a clash in which 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were slain in hand-to-hand combat. India and China have fortified positions and deployed large numbers of troops and equipment in the western Himalayas over the past three years.

“Peace and tranquility in the border regions are essential for normal bilateral relations with China,” Modi told the paper.

“We firmly believe in respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, observing the rule of law, and resolving differences and disputes through peaceful means. Gleichzeitig, India is entirely prepared and committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity.
