In his prison cell, Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, was discovered deceased.

Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski, 81, killed three persons and injured twenty-three more during a mail-bombing spree. He eventually admitted guilt for his offenses.

After evading apprehension for nearly 20 years, he was sentenced to life without parole in 1996.

The mathematician educated at Harvard was eventually apprehended in a Montana cabin.

He fascinated America for decades and became the subject of numerous television documentaries.

Kaczynski served 30 years in US prisons, most recently in a North Carolina medical facility.

This morning at approximately 00:25 local time, prison officers at the Federal Medical Centre in Butner, North Carolina discovered Kaczynski’s body, a spokesperson for the US Bureau of Prisons told.

“Responding staff immediately initiated life-saving measures,” the spokesperson added. Mr. Kaczynski was transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Before his deteriorating health necessitated his transfer to the facility in December 2021, he had been incarcerated at the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, from May 1998 to December 2021.

His violent campaign irreparably disfigured a number of his victims.

In September 1995, he forced the Washington Post and the New York Times to publish his erratic and violent manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future, which revealed his crimes.

On the advice of the FBI and the US attorney general, they consented to publish the manifesto after Kaczynski threatened to end his campaign if a national newspaper published his treatise.

The anonymized 35,000-word document railed against modern life and asserted that technology was causing Americans to feel alienated and impotent.

After recognizing the tone, Kaczynski’s brother and sister-in-law alerted the FBI, which had been seeking him for years.

In April 1996, authorities located the Harvard-educated mathematician in a 10-by-14-foot (three-by-four-meter) plywood and tarpaper cabin outside Lincoln, Montana.

The shack contained journals, a coded diary, explosives, and two finished devices.

Despite the manifesto’s overtly political tone, Kaczynski never sought to assume the revolutionary mantle attributed to him by some.

In his journals, he wrote that he did not pretend to be an altruist or to be acting for the “good” (whatever that is) of humanity, insisting that he acted “simply out of a desire for revenge.”

His crimes appeared to have begun shortly after his brother fired him from the family business for sending insulting limericks to a female coworker who had rejected him after two dates.

From there, he retreated to the wilderness of Montana and his hand-built cabin, which lacked heating, drainage, and electricity.

Also his initial assaults were directed at Northwestern University in Illinois. On 25 May 1978 and 9 May 1979, almost a year apart, two bombings injured two persons.

Then, in November 1979, a device he mailed 1979 that was activated by altitude detonated aboard an American Airlines flight. Twelve individuals were diagnosed with smoke inhalation.

As his targets appeared to be universities and airlines, the FBI dubbed him Unabomber for his attacks.
