A legal official stated that the penalty, combined with her prior convictions, gives her a total prison term of 26 years.

The 77-year-old Nobel laureate, a leader of the opposition to military rule, is charged with at least 18 crimes, ranging from bribery to election breaches, with possible sentences totaling roughly 190 years.

Aung San Suu Kyi's fraud sentence is 26 years.

The graft is described as the act of exploiting a political or government position to obtain money or property through dishonest or fraudulent means.

Suu Kyi has referred to the allegations against her as ridiculous and has denied any misconduct.

In the capital, Naypyidaw, she is being held in solitary confinement, and her trials have been conducted in closed tribunals.

Suu Kyi allegedly accepted payments from a businessman, according to the source, who declined to be identified owing to the sensitivity of the situation.

Suu Kyi was sentenced to concurrent three-year prison terms on two offenses, to be served simultaneously.

Suu Kyis prison

Opponents of the military claim that the charges against Suu Kyi are intended to prevent her from ever again participating in politics or attempting to question the military’s grip on power since the coup last year.

The punishment also threatens the existence of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party due to the government’s stated threats to disband it before the 2023 elections that the military has promised.

Suu Kyi’s party won the 2020 general election by an overwhelming margin. But on February 1, 2021, the military seized control from Suu Kyi’s elected administration, citing allegations of extensive ballot fraud.

Observers of the election found no significant abnormalities.

Two former top members of Suu Kyi’s government were also found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison.
