“Multiple fatalities” reported after two aircraft collide above a California airport.

Two persons were killed when two aircraft collided while attempting to land at a California airfield.

Thursday, just before 3 p.m., a twin-engine Cessna 340 and a single-engine Cessna 152 collided in the air at Watsonville Municipal Airport.

"Multiple fatalities" reported after two aircraft collide above a California airport.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna 340 carried two passengers whereas the Cessna 152 carried only the pilot (FAA).

Officials claimed “several fatalities,” but it was first unclear whether anyone had survived.

On the ground, no one was wounded.

The scene footage depicted the aircraft’s wreckage and the presence of emergency personnel, including firefighters.

Watsonville, located in Santa Cruz County and around 100 miles from San Francisco, released a statement on social media about the accident.

Multiple authorities responded to Watsonville Municipal Airport after two planes collided while attempting to land.

There are several reports of fatalities.

Franky Herrera, who was driving past the airport at the time of the collision, stated that the planes crashed about 200 feet in the air.

“The smaller jet just spiraled down and fell here,” he told the Santa Cruz Sentinel, pointing to the plane’s wreckage near the airfield’s perimeter.

He reported that the twin-engine plane continued to fly despite “struggles” and then noticed flames on the opposite side of the airport.

Images depicted a damaged hangar containing an airplane’s wreckage.

There is no control tower at the municipal airport to direct aircraft landing and takeoff.
