- Some UK regions face freezing temperatures despite recent warmth
- High pressure brings settled weather but also cold northerly winds
- Temperature rise expected after brief chilly spell, followed by varied conditions
Parts of the United Kingdom are expected to experience temperatures that fall to or below zero tonight and possibly again tomorrow.
A portion of England experienced temperatures approaching 22 degrees Celsius earlier this month, which could have led some to believe that spring had arrived.
However, as May approaches, temperatures have fallen precipitously, compelling some to reapply their winter coats and others to reactivate the heating system.
What, then, has caused certain regions of the mercury to decline to near-freezing levels?
Jo Wheeler, a meteorologist for Sky News, asserts that a region of elevated pressure to the west of the United Kingdom is located behind it.
A few days of settled weather were anticipated due to high pressure to the west of the United Kingdom and Ireland, despite the forecast calling for a “cloudy high,” she says.
“And that is essentially what we have observed, although eastern counties can attest that the cold northerly winds were caused by the high’s location.”
“The high was also sufficiently weak to permit the passage of frontal systems (collidions of cold and warm air), so we did not experience completely dry weather either.”
In addition, winds of sufficient strength caused a substantial wind chill along the North Sea littoral, which was quite unpleasant.
Ms Wheeler claims that this has caused temperatures to fall “not by much” below the April mean, which is a few degrees below the current temperature.
When then will temperatures begin to rise once more?
She adds that only a few days remain until May and that an impending change is imminent.
Low pressure that develops over the weekend and moves south will result in milder temperatures, precipitation, and stronger winds.

Nevertheless, the Met Office predicts that the following few days may remain comparatively chilly, especially on Friday night and possibly Saturday, when temperatures in certain regions of northern and eastern England may fall to near or below freezing.
Although temperatures are expected to “trend upwards” beginning on Sunday, precipitation and cloudier conditions are expected to predominate the following week, especially in the southern regions.
Next week, the Met Office predicts drier conditions in the northern regions of the United Kingdom and the possibility of rain or even thundery precipitation for some time in the eastern regions.
They predict that temperatures will continue to rise, with the possibility of a warm to extremely warm phase in some southern and eastern regions, before conditions gradually become drier, cooler, and more stable from the west as the period draws to a close.
