- Historic Victory: Alcaraz becomes youngest athlete since Boris Becker to win Wimbledon at 20 years old
- Defeating Djokovic: Spaniard ends Djokovic’s winning streak in an epic five-set match
- Dream Come True: Alcaraz expresses joy and surprise at reaching the grand slam finals early in his career
Alcaraz is the youngest athlete to win the Challenge Cup since Boris Becker, at the age of 18, won his second of three Wimbledon titles in 1986.
Carlos Alcaraz has claimed the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, ending Novak Djokovic’s streak of victories.
In an epic five-set match, the 20-year-old Spaniard defeated his Serbian opponent 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 to win the trophy for the first time.
After overcoming a nervous first set in which he won only one game, he produced a series of spectacular passing strokes to defeat one of the greatest players in history.
Alcaraz fell to the ground on Centre Court after Djokovic’s final forehand landed in the net.
Since 18-year-old Boris Becker won his second of three Wimbledon titles in 1986, he becomes the youngest athlete to win the Challenge Cup.
It is the first occasion since 2002 that someone other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, or Andy Murray has won the tournament.
For Alcaraz, this is his second grand slam victory after winning the US Open last year. He remains number one on the globe.
After the match, he stated that it was a “dream come true” and that he had not anticipated being in the grand slam finals so early in his career.
He has only participated in four tournaments on grass, including last month’s Queen’s, which he also won.
“I’m falling in love with the grass right now,” he joked.
He told his opponent, “You inspire me a lot.”
Spain’s King Felipe VI was present to witness the victory.
Rafael Nadal wrote on Instagram that Alcaraz had “given us immense joy today.”
Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, and Daniel Craig were on the court alongside Andy Murray.
The victory by Alcaraz prevented Djokovic from winning his eighth Wimbledon championship, which would have tied him with Roger Federer.
The number two seed was on course to win his 24th grand slam and fifth consecutive Wimbledon title, excluding the 2020 tournament that was canceled due to the COVID outbreak.
Djokovic stated, “I was defeated by a better player, so I must congratulate him and move on.”
He stated that he “never likes to lose matches like this” but had previously prevailed in several close contests.
It is “a bitter pill to swallow,” he said.
Alcaraz stated before the match that facing a “legend of our sport” made the final more special.
“I always say that to be the greatest, you must defeat the best. Novak is among the group. “It would be wonderful if I could do it,” he said.
Last month, in the semi-finals of the French Open, Djokovic won the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were observing the event from the regal box.
