Moscow mourns concert shooting; Putin’s response awaited

  • Moscow’s video displays mourn Crocus City Hall massacre victims
  • Russia mourns; national flags at half-mast, events cancelled
  • IS claims responsibility; Russia suggests Ukrainian involvement

New Arbat Avenue in Moscow is lined with some of the country’s largest video displays.

Today, each one is exhibiting an enormous candle accompanied by the Russian phrase “Skorbim” (which translates to “We mourn”).

The casualties of the Crocus City Hall massacre are mourned in Russia. The ultimate death toll is unknown. An ongoing search for corpses ensues.

The Russian tricolour is flown at half mast throughout the nation, sporting and entertainment events have been cancelled, and television newsreaders are attired in black.

Despite its location outside of Moscow’s downtown, Crocus City Hall is one of the most renowned music venues in the country.

The carnage on Friday, however, reduced the concert hall to hell. The assailants utilised both fire and firearms to cause death. They ignited the structure, resulting in the formation of a conflagration. As evidenced by video footage released by the Investigative Committee of Russia, the roof collapsed. Metal beams as well.

Continue to maintain police lines outside the structure. A solitary section of the entertainment complex is illuminated by fire from my vantage point. It is a glimpse of the interior devastation.

Those in the queue are presenting flowers at a makeshift shrine dedicated to the atrocity’s victims. An increasing number of tributes are being accumulated. In addition to bestowing roses and carnations upon the flowers, visitors are also depositing figurines and soft toys upon them. This is because minors were among the deceased.

Additionally, others have been leaving messages. One is directed at the assailants:

There is an assortment of sorrow and rage within this crowd.

“The heart of the nation is aching,” declares Tatyana, who has brought flowers to place here. “My innermost being is weeping.” Russia is in tears. There were so many young individuals killed. “I feel as though my children have passed away.”

“It was a tremendous surprise,” Roman exclaims. “In close proximity, I observed the incident through my window. “It is abhorrent and a major tragedy.”

“Whoever committed this act is not of the human species.” “They are our adversaries,” explains Yevgeny, a pensioner. “In my opinion, the moratorium on the death penalty ought to be lifted. “At a minimum, for terrorists.”

The Islamic State organisation has asserted responsibility for the gunfire rampage at Crocus City Hall. It has released explicit photographs of the rampaging perpetrators. According to US officials, there is no basis to question the assertion of accountability.

In this case, the response has been quite different.

Officials from Russia have been propagating the notion that Ukraine was in some way responsible for the heinous assault.

Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, stated on Saturday via television that the four assailants were apprehended while attempting to escape to Ukraine. The defendant claimed that “a window had been prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border.”

Kyiv needs to consider these types of suggestions. Despite this, pro-Kremlin commentators continue to relay assertions regarding a potential Ukrainian connection.

Moskovsky Komsomolets, a pro-government newspaper, has published an ardently anti-Ukrainian opinion article on its website. The article “Ukraine must be proclaimed a terrorist state” arrived at the following conclusion: “The Kyiv regime must be destroyed immediately… The entire group must perish. Russia possesses the necessary resources to accomplish this.

That which prompts a fundamental inquiry. What is the Kremlin’s anticipated response to this catastrophic assault? Does Russia’s leadership intend to justify a potential further escalation in the country’s conflict in Ukraine with the events that transpired at Crocus City Hall?
