On the last day of the event, the Serbian player kept his cool while his opponent Nick Kyrgios yelled at his team and the umpire.
Novak Djokovic has won his seventh Wimbledon singles championship after defeating Nick Kyrgios in a tightly contested and at times tense final.
The Serbian successfully defended his championship in four sets, prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and 7-6 to earn his 21st Grand Slam title.
“I’m at a loss for words to describe what this tournament and this trophy mean to me, my team, and my family,” said the 35-year-old afterward.
In my heart, it has always been and always will be the most special tournament.
Djokovic has now won seven of the last eleven championships at the All England Club, tying Pete Sampras’ record and falling one victory short of Roger Federer’s record.
Djokovic noted that realizing his childhood dream of collecting the trophy “becomes increasingly meaningful and special” with each victory.
As the score shifted in Djokovic’s favor, Kyrgios began to lose his composure, resulting in a code penalty for profanity.
He complained angrily to the umpire that a “drunk” woman in the audience was shouting at him during the game.
Djokovic, who had won the previous three titles at SW19, maintained his composure while his opponent from Australia yelled at his staff and the umpire.
Kyrgios, upon receiving the runner-up trophy from the Duchess of Cambridge, remarked of Djokovic, “He’s a god. I felt I performed nicely.”
He continued, “To all the ball kids and umpires, I realize we have a difficult relationship, but I appreciate your patience. And the crowd has been incredible.”
Kyrgios, 27, was charged with abusing his ex-girlfriend days before the final.
This is the first Grand Slam tournament where an unseeded player has advanced beyond the quarterfinals.
The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge, along with their son Prince George, were present in the Centre Court crowd.
Djokovic said to his rival, “You’ll be back. Not only at Wimbledon, but also in the finals.
I realize it’s difficult to find words of comfort after a loss like this, but you’ve demonstrated why you deserve to be considered one of the finest players in the world.
