- Messi returns to action after ankle injury
- Available for Inter Miami vs. Philadelphia Union
- 12 goals, 13 assists in 12 MLS games
Lionel Messi is expected to return to action with Inter Miami, his Major League Soccer club, after missing more than two months due to an ankle injury, says Miami coach Gerardo Martino.
Messi has not played since spraining his right ankle in Argentina’s Copa America final victory over Colombia on July 14, 2024. He last played for Inter Miami on June 1, but Martino says he will be available for selection against the visiting Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
“Yes, he’s fine now,” Martino told reporters on Friday.
“He returned to training yesterday.” He is considered for tomorrow’s game, and after training, we will choose his strategy, but he is available. We will once again have the finest player in the world on our side, which makes us all pleased.
Messi missed Wednesday’s training due to a sore throat before joining the Herons on Thursday.

“Fortunately, the painful throat lasted only one day. Yesterday, he trained normally. “Let’s hope he continues to evolve today,” Martino remarked. “It’s about taking into consideration all that’s happened to define the strategy.”
With 59 points in 27 games, Inter Miami is closing in on the Supporters’ Shield and the Eastern Conference’s top postseason seed.
The 37-year-old attacker has 12 goals and 13 assists in just 12 MLS games this season, becoming the league’s fastest player to 25 goal contributions ever.
He has missed eight MLS games with his club, as well as his country’s World Cup qualifiers this month.
Argentina, the world champions and Copa America victors, were without their talismanic captain on Tuesday as they suffered a shock defeat away to Colombia.
