Elon Musk walks Tesla’s Optimus robot, raising viewer concerns

  • Robot potential household helper
  • Purchase prediction 2025-2027

Elon Musk has released impressive footage of his Optimus robot, which he hopes will eventually offer household assistance.

A video was uploaded by the billionaire owner of Tesla to X (formerly Twitter), showing the nearly 6-foot-tall humanoid walking across the factory floor.

Elon Musk, who frequently posts videos showcasing the machine’s remarkable capabilities, wrote in the post, “Enjoying a stroll with Optimus.”

In response, audience members typically voiced apprehensions about the potential global dominance of machines.

One individual responded, “This will not end well,” whereas another stated, “It will be fantastic until robots start killing humans.”

Others compared it to the NS5 machines from the American science fiction action film “I, Robot,” released in 2004.

An additional user commented, “He appears to need to use the loo.”

Several X users have speculated that the machine’s speed is comparable to that of 81-year-old US President Joe Biden.

Others, however, appeared genuinely impressed, as one commented, “I adore these Optimus updates. Great to see the progress.”

“My gait looks much more natural than I had anticipated,” said another.

Optimus’ Progress and Capabilities

The video highlights a significant detail: the lack of a white metal covering on the torso of the robot, which exposes its internal components.

Optimus was initially unveiled during Tesla’s AI Day event in August 2021; however, over two years have passed with no official announcement regarding its public release date.

A year later, the first prototype of the automaton was introduced. However, its capabilities were limited to traversing the stage and waving.

Gen 2 uses its powerful touch senses to grip and pick up an egg without shattering it in the video.

A separate promotional video from earlier in the year featured Optimus demonstrating its balance while performing basic yoga postures and standing on one leg.

Tesla claims that Optimus is nearly six feet tall, walks five miles per hour, and can deadlift 150 pounds.

The humanoid Optimus is equipped with the Autopilot computer, which is used in the company’s electric vehicles and enables it to identify objects in the real world.

Optimus: Beyond a Mere Robot

Elon Musk has likened it to a factory worker, but he also believes it could become an “incredible friend like R2D2 or C3PO” for the average household user.

It should be able to remove things from stores and wrench on car bolts.

Musk remarked that, in contrast to lethal robots, the Tesla automaton is physically subdued by the average human. Indicating that it poses a lesser threat than initially appears.

Already vocal about his concerns regarding artificial intelligence, the South African-born businessman has described it as “significantly more dangerous than nuclear weapons” and “more perilous than North Korea.

Musk thinks that Optimus would cost “likely less than $20,000” (£16,000) between 2025 and 2027.

The next Tesla AI Day event is slated to take place this summer and deliver updates.
