Following concerns over the diversity of its membership, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organizes the Golden Globes, stated it has just added 103 new voters, making its voting pool “52% female, 51.5% racially and culturally diverse.”
In 2023, the Golden Globes will once again be aired, after being held in secret this year due to criticism around the diversity of the organizing body’s membership.
Power Of The Dog, West Side Story, and Succession were among the big winners in 2022, but they were announced without fanfare, the traditionally star-studded ceremony being replaced by basic online updates when its long-term US broadcaster, NBC, canceled the show.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organizes the event, has announced that the Golden Globes will now air on NBC and Peacock, the network’s streaming service.
On Tuesday, 10 January 2023, the awards ceremony will return to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Who will follow in the footsteps of Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler has not yet been revealed.
The HFPA recently added 103 new voters, marking the first time international voters were added to the pool, according to the organization.
The voting body is now comprised of 62 countries from around the globe.
“The whole Golden Globe Awards voting body is now 52% female, 51.5% racially and culturally diverse, with 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black, and 10% Middle Eastern members,” the organization claimed.
Helen Hoehne, the HFPA’s president, issued the following statement: “We are ecstatic to announce the return of the Golden Globe Awards on NBC and to host the ‘party of the year’ for audiences across the world who have eagerly anticipated its return.
“It is a pleasure to return to the Beverly Hilton for the celebration honoring the greatest in cinema and television.
The HFPA remains committed to funding programs that encourage diversity, inclusiveness, and openness.
Frances Berwick, chairwoman of NBCUniversal’s entertainment networks, stated, “We recognize the HFPA’s dedication to continual reform and look forward to welcoming the Golden Globes back to NBC for its 80th anniversary in January 2023.
The reveal
The dispute arose as a result of a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation that revealed the HFPA had no black members voting for the awards, as well as claims of improper “freebies” influencing votes.
Reportedly, actor Tom Cruise returned the three trophies he had collected over the years in protest.
This year, there were no dramatic or memorable acceptance speeches, red carpet attire, or hosts due to the absence of renowned attendance or even a live feed.
Those who desired to follow at home could only do so by monitoring the Golden Globes’ website and social media outlets.
The nominees for the 80th annual Golden Globes will be announced on December 12 of next year, before the presentation.
