The Emmys and BAFTAs may have gone to Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, and Doctor Who, but Radio Times website readers have chosen Call The Midwife as the finest show of recent years. Creator Heidi Thomas said the prize came as “a nice surprise”.

Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, Doctor Who, and Line Of Duty were defeated by the British historical drama Call The Midwife in a new vote to choose the greatest series of the previous 25 years.

Miranda Hart, Emerald Fennell, Jenny Agutter, and Helen George have all appeared in the series.

The series, which debuted in 2012, topped a Radio Times poll commemorating the website’s 25th anniversary.

Radio Times’ television specialists created a list from which readers could select the best program of the past quarter-century.

Call The Midwife won with 25 percent of the vote, despite competing with several Emmy and BAFTA-winning programs, according to the media site.

Doctor Who came in second place with 13 percent of the vote, while Line Of Duty and Sherlock tied for third with 7 percent. Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones respectively received 5% and 4% of the vote.

The shows Fleabag, Gavin And Stacey, Succession, The Sopranos, and The Wire were also in contention.

Heidi Thomas, the creator of Call the Midwife, described the victory as a “delightful surprise.”

She went on: “When you’ve been performing for as many years as we have, you realize you’re no longer a novelty, so I believe this speaks much about our audience’s dedication.

“However, it is also about the fact that we’re doing something correctly to make the show interesting as it progresses. I believe that this is the most encouraging aspect.”

She went on: “In terms of competing with other shows, I do not believe theatre should be a sport. I believe that all notable dramas have something to offer their audience, and there is such a range of programming available to viewers today from the various streaming services.

“I’m just incredibly pleased that we’re still at the top with shows that are so recent and so widely advertised.”
