Mariah Carey has dethroned Taylor Swift from the number-one slot on the UK singles chart, and it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.
All I Want For Christmas Is You has been streamed 10.8 million times in the previous week, placing it at the top of the chart.
Additional 23 holiday favorites have made the Top 40.
The 1994 release of Carey’s song, which is widely recognized as a modern classic, hit number one for the first time in 2020.
Wham’s Last Christmas sits at number three on this week’s chart, followed by Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s Merry Christmas at number four.
Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee comes in at number six, followed by perennial favorites Merry Christmas Everyone, Fairytale Of New York, and It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year.
Gleam of light
Swift’s Anti-Hero dropped to fifth place after six weeks at the top of the charts, and Lewis Capaldi’s new single, Pointless, debuted at number twenty.
However, one artist has bucked the pattern. This week, Raye’s current single, Escapism, reached a new career high by climbing to the number two spot.
The vocalist has previously penned successes for Charli XCX and Little Mix and has also had success as a featured artist on Jax Jones and David Guetta songs.
However, her solo effort initially failed to ignite the same level of interest, and last year she informed fans that her record label refused to release her album.
Now independent, she has achieved chart success owing in part to TikTok, where the rebellious and relatable lyrics of her song have inspired over 150,000 music videos.
Right now, I feel on top of the world,” she told. “I have the want to throw up. I feel as though I am in a simulation; nothing seems real.”
The singer stated that she hoped the success of Escapism would aid in the discovery of her upcoming album, which will be released in February.
“It’s my first record if you catch my drift. Since I published my debut song ten years ago, I am finally able to compile a body of work “She stated,
“I am quite pleased with it. It is an extremely diverse blend of many emotions and noises. Now that I am independent, I can do as I like.”
Sir Cliff Richard’s Christmas With Cliff is at number four on this week’s album chart, followed by Michael Bublé’s Christmas at number five and Andre Rieu’s Silver Bells at number six.
As Fleetwood Mac fans continue to grieve the loss of Christine McVie, two of the band’s albums appear in this week’s top 20, with Rumours at number 11 and 50 Years – Don’t Stop at number 15.
However, Olly Murs’s new hit, Marry Me, debuted at number one, making him the chart king.
It’s the fifth number one for the X Factor alum, following In Case You Haven’t Noticed (2011), Right Place Right Time (2012), Never Been Better (2014), and 24 HRS (2016).
The singer stated in a statement, “Wow, it’s been six years since I had a number one, so thank you so much to all the fans, you’ve been incredible.”
“I do not believe it has fully sunk in yet. A great deal of effort has gone into creating… Thank you incredibly!”
