England’s 3-0 victory over Wales drew an average of 16,59 million viewers on BBC One in the United Kingdom on Tuesday night.
The statistic is derived from overnight rating data provided by Barb but excludes viewers of the Welsh language channel S4C.
Some will have also viewed the group game via iPlayer, a fact that is not completely reflected in Barb’s data.
Wales has been eliminated from the World Cup, while England has advanced to the round of 16 as the group champion.
The BBC reported that its match coverage on all of its platforms – TV, iPlayer, and BBC Sport Online – reached a peak audience of 18.7 million viewers.
While England participated in the most recent World Cup in 2018, Wales participated in their first World Cup match in 64 years.
Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden, both of whom started for the first time in the competition, scored for England.
They will meet Senegal on Sunday evening, with ITV broadcasting the match.
Throughout the duration of the tournament, the total number of viewers viewing any given match will increase when additional data is included, such as the number of individuals who watched at different times or via particular catch-up systems.
