Vauxhall has introduced a new electrified sub-range, with two Astras as the initial models.

The titles of a new hot hatchback and sports tourer estate are followed by the abbreviation GSe, which stands for ‘Grand Sport Electric’.

They are propelled by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor and battery to provide 225 horsepower.

Deliveries will begin in 2023, and prices start at approximately £40,000.

Vauxhall is dedicated to becoming an electric-only brand by 2028, thus fully electric GSe models will follow.

The pair of new PHEVs have a 10mm lower ride height, improved steering, and electronic stability control (ESC) calibrations that provide superior stability while cornering, under braking, and at faster speeds, complementing the increased performance and more nimble handling.

The steering has been calibrated for a sportier feel, while the front and rear suspension’s innovative springs and oil-filled dampers are optimized for both dynamic driving and comfort.

The design features 18-inch alloy wheels inspired by the Manta GSe concept, bespoke Alcantara front sports seats approved by Germany’s AGR Campaign for Healthier Backs, and a GSe badge on the trunk lid.

According to Vauxhall, they match the best in their respective classes for acceleration from a stop, highest speed, driving pleasure, and lower emissions.

Vauxhall MD James Taylor stated, “They are the right vehicles for the introduction of our dynamic new sub-brand since they offer athletic style, better driving performance, and all the advantages of an electrified engine.”

Nissan’s Sunderland output reaches 5 million units.

Five million Qashqai and Juke SUVs have been produced at Nissan’s Sunderland factory, just as new electrified crossover models are coming off the assembly lines.

The new Qashqai e-Power and Juke hybrids will be manufactured concurrently with the all-electric Leaf.

The pair is a part of Nissan’s £500 million investment, which also includes a new £10 million battery pack assembly facility.

Leasing of electric vehicles in the fast lane

In just four years, the number of drivers seeking to lease an electric vehicle has increased roughly 17-fold, according to Leasing.com.

During the first six months of 2022, one-fifth of all lease inquiries for new cars were for battery-electric vehicles, compared to just 1.2% for the entire year of 2018.

The average price of the sought-after electric vehicles was £43,142.
